The Diocese of Aberdeen has announced the death of Very Rev. Canon Bernard Gordon MacDonald, who passed away peacefully in Invergordon on the 4th April. His funeral took place on Friday 13 April at St Ninian’s, Inverness with burial in Fodderty Cemetery.
The Bishop of Aberdeen, the Rt Rev Hugh Gilbert OSB said: “Canon Bernard will be remembered as a dedicated servant of the People of God in our diocese and as a wise, diligent, gentle man, a good counsellor, with a fine memory and an eye for the humorous, one of the pillars of our presbyterate. May he rest in peace!”
Canon Bernard MacDonald spend his life servicing the Diocese of Aberdeen. He was born in Dufftown, then Banffshire on Christmas Day 1924 and began his vocation studying at Blairs Junior Seminary, before progressing to St Peter’s, Bearsden and finally studying for three years at St Edmunds, Ware (Hertfordshire). Upon completion of his studies he was ordained at St Mary’s Cathedral, Aberdeen, by Bishop John Mathieson, on 15 August 1948.
After his ordination Canon Bernard worked in a number of parishes throughout the Diocese of Aberdeen:
1948 – 1955 – Curate, St Mary’s Cathedral, Aberdeen
1955 – 1961 – Parish Priest, Holy Family, Mastrick, Aberdeen
1961 – 1979 – Parish Priest, St Lawrence’s, Dingwall
1979 – 1989 – Parish Priest, St Ninian’s, Inverness
1989 – 1997 – Parish Priest, St Joachim’s Wick, and, St Anne’s, Thurso
1997 – 2003 – Parish Priest, St Mary’s, Fochabers
2003 – 2018 – Retired, Alness
After spending his well-earned retirement in Alness, he died peacefully in the care of Invergordon County Community Hospital, on April 4, 2018, aged 93 years. Canon Bernard will be missed by many from across the diocese. May he rest in peace!
