Heaven, Earth and Jesus: The Mysteries of Christian Eschatology – 2026 Pluscarden Pentecost Lectures

Heaven, Earth and Jesus: The Mysteries of Christian Eschatology, a series of four Pentecost lectures given by Fr Simon Francis Gaine OP, Professor of Theological Anthropology, Pontifical University of St Thomas Aquinas, Rome. These lectures will take place between 26th and 28th May 2026 at Pluscarden Abbey, near Elgin.

  •
Lecture 1: Tuesday 26th May at 15:00
  • Lecture 2: Wednesday 27 May at 10:30
  • Lecture 3: Wednesday 27th May at 15:00
  • Lecture 4: Thursday 28th May at 10:30

The Lectures will address some of these questions:
Jesus Christ preached that the Kingdom of Heaven was at hand, that it had come among those where he acted by God’s Holy Spirit. Does that mean that heaven, the ‘last things’ that Christians call ‘eschatological’, had already arrived on earth? Did Jesus’ actions during his earthly lifetime bring heaven to earth? Eschatology is traditionally not just about heaven and hell; it’s about death and judgment too. But why do we die if Jesus has already conquered death? And what happens to us when we die? Is eschatology just about individual souls and what happens to them after death? If our souls are truly happy in heaven, why would it be for bodies as well as souls? Is heaven a place, and if it is, where is it, and could we travel there? Is Jesus there now?

There is no charge for these lectures, and all are welcome to attend.
