Bishop Hugh has commissioned the creation of a new icon cross – based on the cross of San Damiano (pictured below) – painted identically on both sides. It is being made by iconographer, Martin Earle, and will replace the present grey fibreglass cross as the first part of the Sanctuary Reordering Project.
The Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross celebrates two historical events:
- The discovery of the True Cross by Saint Helena, the mother of Emperor Constantine, in 320 under the temple of Venus in Jerusalem, and
- The dedication in 335 of the basilica and shrine built on Calvary by Constantine, marks the site of the Crucifixion.
Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, 14 September 2023 at 18:00 in St Mary’s Cathedral, Aberdeen. During Mass Bishop Hugh will bless the new life-sized sanctuary cross which will hang above the altar.
